Earlier this month I headed to south-central Greenville to walk a fairly ambitious 8.7-mile loop along Sunny Hill Road and Route 67. This walk covered a surprising diversity of environments and neighborhoods, some providing excellent view of the mountains to the southwest. It also took me through the centers of two hamlets, Freehold and Place Corners, in southern Greenville.

Late morning clouds surrounded the summits of the distant High Peaks, including Blackhead Mountain (seen here).

This old radio tower has been showing up in my Greenville pictures since at least last December.

A closer view of the radio tower reveals its long-derelict state.

An ivy-covered power line cuts through the westernmost portions of the Sunny Hill Resort, a popular golf course in the area. |
|
This odd structure doesn't seem to serve any current purpose; it may have once been part of a dismantled attraction.

Aspen leaves shine against the bright summer sky. |

A view of Stoppel Point and the Catskill Escarpment from near the Sunny Hill Resort.
|
|
Clouds still enveloped Blackhead by the time I reached the resort's center.

|
In the distance, Windham High Peak retained the last of its cloudy cap.

A golfer golfs beneath a large oak tree, all under the backdrop of Burnt Knob and the northern Escarpment.

A view from the shaded road down to a sunny farm in Place Corners. |

This field probably held livestock recently, but this summer bushes and tall weeds have been allowed to grow. |

Old-fashioned barbed wire encloses the extensive fields along Route 41.

|
In dense hemlock forest on the opposite side of the road, the few spots where sunlight shines through the thick canopy are occupied by light-loving ferns.

Hayfield on a hillside, just a few days after haying. Most fields are generally cut after Fourth of July.

|
A very rustic-looking A-frame house along Route 67. Although once common in the area, many similar houses have recently been torn down and replaced.

Greenville is home to many golf courses; here Windham rises over the driving range at Thunderhart. As Route 67 runs along the town's southern border, this image is technically of the town of Cairo.

Grapevines occult Windham High Peak, seen from the top of a hill near Freehold Heights Road.

|
From this angle Blackhead, Black Dome, and the various smaller peaks in their vicinity are seen in various layers, rather than a single ridge or lump.

A wide-angle shot shows the mountains from Blackhead to Windham from the crest of the hill.

This flag sits among a garden, a swamp, and some well-maintained private trails on Freehold Heights Road.

Trees, Windham, and scattered clouds.

|
Although it's one of the largest bodies of water in the town, I couldn't find a name for this sizable lake east of Freehold.
|
|
Heading down the hill on Route 67 gives an all the more impressive view of the northern Catskills.

|
Blackhead watches over this small house on small hill.

Endless vehicles line a smaller lake near a large equipment dealer in Freehold. |

A wide view of both the equipment and the mountain the looms over it.
