08-10-2019: Huntersfield Mountain

In early August, I climbed Huntersfield Mountain in Ashland NY, a peak I had wanted to hike for some time. Huntersfield is the highest point in Schoharie County, and at 3420' is just short of making the list of Catskill High Peaks. It was very short and not too steep, and I ended up going without so much as a bottle of water. A lean-to at the summit provided excellent views to the south and east.

In the intervening time between my last post and now, I took a number of drives through the countryside of rural Schoharie and Delaware counties, taking a number of pictures along the way. As there aren't quite enough to justify a separate post, I'll include them here.

View from the lean-to atop Huntersfield Mountain. West Kill Mountain, at center, dominates the scene.
Cloesup on houses in Sutton Hollow.
Distant view of Falke's Quarry at the base of Tower Mountain.
A tin-roofed house peeks through the wild forest that surrounds Huntersfield.
This collapsed cairn was found near an overgrown overlook just above the trailhead.
On to the drives. Pine Moutnain (L) peers above this shot of August fields along NY-10 in Sharon NY.
Honey Hill (L) and its surrounding highlands dominate the view from south Sharon.
Rural farmland and forests in Richmondville NY. Warnerville Hill is to the left.
Towering clouds fortell a late summer storm along the Hudson River.
A long-abandoned and overgrown farmhouse in East Meredith NY.
This shot of blooming Queen Anne's Lace was taken from nearly three feet away.
Two young deer dine in a hayfield in Durham NY.
...it took the other one awhile to notice me.
