05-16-2019: Higher Ground

Day two of walking in Greenville. This day I walked up CR-50, known locally as North Road, and Sunset Road, both located north of Norton Hill. I walked them both to the county line; a small portion of Sunset also juts out into Durham. At nearly 1100 feet, North Road is the highest elevation public road in Greenville, and thus affords spectacular views of the mountains to the south.

Blackhead, Black Dome, and Thomas Cole tower over forest in Norton Hill.
This swamp along Route 50 is just one of many that dot the southern Helderberg region.
Some sort of insect (not a bug guy, don't know which) stops on a dandelion along the roadside.
A rabbit hides in bushes along the road, terrified at my passing.
An abandoned old farm building on Sunset Road.
From Sunset, Blackhead and Black Dome tower over Acra Point in the foreground.
Windham, along with Black Dome and Thomas Cole to the left, looms over the dilapidated building from before.
A closer look reveals bits of snow lingering near Blackhead's summit, despite a day of 60 F (16 C) temperatures.
North Mountain and Stoppel Point are quite prominent from Greenville despite their location (ironically) 15 miles to the south.
Sunset Road wanders into Durham for less than half a mile before leaving the county. This is the only road directly crossing from Durham into Westerlo, a town to its northeast.
Back in Greenville, pine trees living and dead stand tall in another swampy area along Sunset Road.
View down North Road towards Stoppel Point.
Windham watches over a pine tree along Route 50.
The Blackhead Range in all its glory, with the lesser peaks of the Escarpment blocking their cols.
The occasional westward clearing permits views of Hayden, Ginseng, and Zoar (seen here).
Slopes on the distant Arizona Mountain. Here a clear line can be seen where leaves haven't yet appeared at higher elevations.
This rusted-out siren at the Norton Hill Firehouse is loud enough to drown out the whole valley in times of distress.
Heading back into town, Windham looms over a motel and some other buildings.
