12-03-2018 - Cochrane Road

For the past several months, I have made it my continuing endeavor to walk every public thru road in the small town of Durham NY, hopefully moving on to the surrounding areas eventually. The town's situation in the northern Catskill Mountains provides for breathtaking views, and it gets me out and active on a regular basis. To this endeavor I dedicate this site, and to the sharing of the beauty I observe along the way.

Today's hike was a two-mile stretch of Cochrane Road in the area of West Durham. It was an unseasonably warm day, with a high near 50 F, and a weeks-long streak of cloudiness was finally broken, making for excellent walking conditions. Eleven images from today's walk are included below.

Mount Hayden (R) and subsidary peak Mount Nebo (L).

Another view of Hayden and Nebo over a field.

The Hayden/Nebo structure was incredibly prominent from this segment of
road, seen here above a half-frozen pond.

A pond, likely artificial, half melted from two days of high temperatures.
Dead fields over clouds with the slightest hint of pink.

Functioning farmstead. I rarely find buildings beautiful but this old place was
an exception, reminding me of a place I once lived.
Northward at sunset.

A little brook. This unnamed stream is likely dry most of the year, as an
unusually wet November has swelled local rivers tremendously.

Sunlit clouds. Dead fields often look dreary, but there's still a certain beauty
to them.

Another pond. Much smaller than the first, with an almost comically sloped
hill behind it.
The weather outlook for this week is good, relatively warm and sunny. Whether or not it holds up is yet to be determined, but I look forward to more walks like this one; with them will certainly come more pictures.
